Give AI assistants read-only access to Xero receipts, attachments and full transaction history
Xero's official AI integrations have enormous potential, but their usefulness is limited when they cannot access the supporting documents and detailed transaction records behind the figures.
The suggestion
Expand Xero's official MCP/API capabilities to allow authorised AI assistants, including ChatGPT, to:
Read attached receipts and invoices – Access supporting documents linked to transactions, bills and payments.
Search complete transaction histories – Search across dates, suppliers, descriptions, amounts and account codes.
Examine the full general ledger – Retrieve detailed accounting records across selected periods, including historical transactions.
Identify possible accounting errors – Compare transactions with their supporting documents to highlight duplicate payments, incorrect VAT treatment, unusual expenditure and possible coding mistakes.
Answer detailed financial questions – Allow users to investigate their accounts conversationally without repeatedly exporting spreadsheets.
Why this matters
Many businesses already attach receipts and supporting documents to nearly every transaction. That information could make AI-powered financial analysis considerably more useful.
Imagine asking:
"Find any payments where the attached receipt doesn't match the amount recorded."
"Check whether any supplier invoices appear to have been paid twice."
"Review the last 12 months of expenses and highlight transactions that may have been coded incorrectly."
"Show me which suppliers have increased their prices most over the past year."
These are practical questions that could save business owners, bookkeepers and accountants considerable time.
Security and control
Access should be read-only by default, respect existing Xero user permissions and clearly identify which organisation is being examined. Results should link back to the original Xero records for verification.
Any ability to change accounting records should require separate permissions and explicit user approval.
The benefit
This would make Xero's existing AI integrations far more valuable to small businesses, accountants, bookkeepers and software developers, without requiring customers to build their own integrations.
The technology to analyse this information already exists. The missing piece is secure, authorised access to the underlying records.
Making this available through Xero's official MCP/API tools would be a significant step towards genuinely useful AI-powered accounting.
