allow uploading of receipt (files) for expense claims
Ability to upload a copy of a receipt to accompany an expense claim. Could be a scanned image or photo (JPG) taken of the receipt with your mobile phone.
Our API release today contains the functionality to create receipts, including attaching a file.

Xero does it again. Well done!

You can now upload attachments for AP invoices and expense claims - see http://blog.xero.com/2011/05/keeping-all-your-documents-in-one-place/ . Looking to add ability to upload files via API reasonably soon - no ETA just yet

All would be needed in Xero is a link (url) to that document in its digital version at its online location.

I am desperately trying to find a solution along that line : to create links between journal entries (expenses mainly) and digital versions (pdf or jpg) of existing documents). The big audit firms here have gone or are about to go 100% digital in their audit process, and that would streamline and speed up my preparation for audit. Plus, it would allow me to eliminated paper archives. Our Revenu allows digital copies. So, in a perfect world, the web-based accounting solution I'm using (Xero for the past few years - or a different one if it has to come to that) will allow me to do just that : link a digital version of a document - to its entry. I would be willing to buy storage space according to my needs, as an add-on to the web-based accounting solution.

We are pretty close to delivering this feature for receipts and invoices - stay tuned over the next few weeks.

@Matthew/@gruenm Receipt uploading will be coming with the Xero Touch mobile application (http://blog.xero.com/2011/02/xero-touch/) once it's been bedded in with the application we'll be looking to add accessibility via the API to expenses including the receipt storage functionality.

Webrecs is a service that can take all your source docs and scan them (or you send scanned images to them). They return a file with all the transactions coded for import into Xero, but also store all the images online. The imported transaction includes a hyperlink in the description field which sends you to where the source document is stored. A nice interface allows easy finding and viewing of documents regardless of client, date or transaction type. This is not likely a solution for small businesses, but for larger ones and bookkeeper/accounting practices. Worth a look. Ask for the free webinar/demo

No comments? This is huge feature. I'd likely give all my votes to this one as well. With cloud storage so cheap, can't this be implemented with limited costs? Also, can't it be done so that the only thing showing on the actual Xero interface would be the links? Clicking on them would open the document is a separate window. This way there would be limited or no impact on the actual Xero application. Even a simple, non-snazzy implementation would do wonders. Our bookkeepers work remotely and the paper handling is a huge time sink.

Xero. Any reply on this? This is honestly the only thing keeping me from coming onboard. Here is what would set you apart from the competition (i know, I've tried them all):
1. Ability to upload PDF/image receipts.
2. On the brand new iPhone app, be able to take photos of receipts and use this.
3. (Optional) Forward receipts from inbox to a unique xero email address. So forwarding an HTML receipt / PDF attachment etc to your userid@xero.com email address. This would queue them up to be sorted on next log in.Timescales would be excellent Xero. Just to know it was being considered. No competitors do this (or do it well). Even if expenses were opened up on the API, it would allow someone to develop a third party system to do this. It is such an excellent product. I hope you continue to innovate and listen to your customers (and customers to be)

I'd really like to see this. It would make life a lot easier and reduce the amount of paper floating around. Are there any third party apps that do this?

This is a more needed feature for small businesses wanting to go paperless. Any workarounds currently available? Take a look at SmartVault - http://www.smartvault.com/ for some ideas.

The same concept for Invoices can be found at http://xero.uservoice.com/forums/5528-xero-api/suggestions/444092-allow-attachments-of-pdf-on-payable-invoices

This would be a valuable addition to Xero features. Agreed - not necessary for ALL transactions, but certainly for expense claims, loan, chattel mortgage docs, and other items the accountant would likely want to sight, attaching these to the transaction would be a winner.

I looked at how to go about doing this with Amazon S3 and probably would have done it for all resources were it not for the absence of expenses in the API (the most obvious useful application in terms of scanned receipts).

that would be a cool concept for all invoices/receipts not just expense claims, however it would require a lot more storage, so that means the monthly fee might be higher if you were to store images. may be a good idea for a xero pro version
